According to exclusive Sigma information and communication with Radiographers Branch President Thasos Athanasiou, a man launched a brutal attack on Saturday on staff at Nicosia General Hospital while undergoing a CT scan.
The incident began when the technician operating the machine remarked that the patient was moving, prompting the patient to react aggressively as she removed him from the scanner.
Beating escalates to multiple staff
The patient then shouted insults and threw technical equipment to the ground before punching the radiographer, who called for help.
He also assaulted a nurse who intervened to assist the attacked staff member.
Two more hospital staff members arrived after hearing the cries but could not effectively subdue the attacker.
The primary victim sustained serious injuries to her face and spine.
Call for enhanced hospital security
Mr. Athanasiou demanded increased security and policing in hospital areas, noting such incidents occur daily in the Emergency Department.
A police complaint has been filed, with the Police Department set to handle the case.
Meanwhile, the perpetrator continues receiving normal treatment at the hospital, as neurologists have not discharged him.
