The Board of the Pancyprian Union of Government Doctors (PASYKI) calls for the immediate and proper staffing of all hospital departments with specialised personnel, in accordance with official announcements and international standards.
The Union “denounces the misleading stance of the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) regarding the staffing of the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) at Famagusta General Hospital.”
The announcement continues, stating that “SHSO admits that two of the nine doctors currently staffing the AED are providing services without possessing the required qualifications set forth in its official announcements, which include specialisations in General Medicine, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, or General Surgery, prior experience, and certifications in ALS (Advanced Life Support) and ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support).”
It adds that SHSO justifies this by citing a related directive from the Health Insurance Organisation, which permits non-specialized doctors to provide services in AEDs. The Union, representing the medical community, disagrees with this directive, especially now that the specialty of Emergency Medicine has been recognised as a distinct field.
PASYKI further emphasises that “SHSO’s practice of covering permanent vacancies with doctors lacking specialisation through service contracts degrades the quality of care provided and poses risks.”
“We demand the immediate and proper staffing of all departments with specialised personnel, in line with official announcements and international standards,” PASYKI concludes.
