The House of Representatives unanimously approved amendments on Thursday to provide military insurance coverage for members of the National Guard who qualify for allowances under existing regulations. The coverage applies in cases of death or permanent total incapacity for work if the incident occurs while performing duties that would qualify them for the allowance.
Coverage amounts and distribution
The military insurance provides a lump sum of €115,000, distributed equally among the deceased’s heirs according to the provisions of the Administration of Estates of Deceased Persons Law, plus €95,000 for each dependent.
In cases of permanent total incapacity for work, the insured member receives €115,000, plus €95,000 per dependent. Payments are contingent upon a decision from the relevant medical board, confirming incapacity due to injury sustained while performing military duties or during activities qualifying for the allowance.
Tax-free and legally safeguarded
The insurance payouts are exempt from taxes or other charges. If heirs or incapacitated members pursue additional compensation from the State, courts will consider and offset the amount already paid under the regulations when determining final compensation.
Compensation reflects duty risks
The allowances aim to compensate members of the National Guard for the risks involved in performing specific hazardous duties. The amounts for each allowance were set by Cabinet decision on 11 June 2025.
