The Pancyprian Confederation of Parents’ Associations of Primary Education (PCPAPE) decided to request an immediate meeting with the Minister of Education. Leaders made this choice during an emergency Central Secretariat session yesterday.
The confederation aims to submit its positions and proposals on the POED-announced teacher strike. It also plans to discuss broader issues concerning children’s learning and upbringing levels.
In its announcement, the group stated that it fully respects teachers’ constitutional right to strike, as it has declared and supported in the past. However, it equally respects children’s right to education and parents’ right to normal daily routines.
The announcement added: “Any attempt to reverse these principles will find parents, students, and society opposed. They do not intend to become pawns in arbitrary and unilateral initiatives.”
Furthermore, it emphasised: “Our children’s education does not serve as a negotiable pressure tool. Nor can children become hostages to union agendas.”
Kindergarten parents’ views
The Pancyprian Confederation of Public and Community Kindergarten Parents’ Associations also issued a statement. It expressed strong dissatisfaction and indignation over POED’s new work stoppage announcement for 18 December 2025.
This comes as public consultation has ended and parliamentary proceedings reach their final stage.
Despite modifications and adjustments to the teacher evaluation bill that considered all stakeholders’ views, POED again chooses confrontation. The union insists on strike measures and leaves open the possibility of harsher actions.
This stance not only causes legitimate concern among parents but also undermines the stability essential to the educational process.
The statement reiterated respect for teachers’ strike rights. However, repeated use directly harms children’s right to smooth, continuous, and safe education.
Finally, it appealed to POED to accept the shaped evaluation plan, end the unjustified hardship for students and families, and stop using the educational process as a bargaining tool.
