Paphos municipality urged to cooperate in Phedonos investigation

Date:

The Acting Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforou, has issued clear instructions to all municipal department heads to comply with requests from the Auditor General’s Office and provide any documents or information related to investigations concerning suspended Mayor Phedonas Phedonos.

Support for authorities’ work

Dr. Christos Christou, the municipality’s spokesperson, confirmed that the instructions aim to facilitate the work of authorities investigating matters that have recently surfaced in the media. This includes visits by Auditor General officials and, potentially, members of the police. No officials have yet visited the municipality, but a team is expected shortly to examine information reported publicly and any other relevant processes within the council.

Municipal council session

On Monday afternoon, the full Paphos Municipal Council convened under the Acting Mayor. The session began with a brief address by AKEL councillor Kostas Diplaros, announcing his resignation in protest over a specific clause of the Municipal Law related to non-permanent employees in education. His resignation is now formalised, and his replacement, Ioakeim Agathangelou, awaits official appointment.

Administrative and technical matters

The council also discussed administrative and technical matters, including replacing the suspended mayor in various committees. The Acting Mayor assumed these responsibilities, except for committees at Paphos District Local Government Organisation (EOA) and the Landfill (ΧΥΤΑ), where the Ministry of Interior will advise on appropriate replacements.

Committees and ongoing projects

The Audit and Personnel Committees, previously underperforming, will intensify meetings to resolve pending matters. Councillors will also inspect ongoing municipal projects to assess progress and identify future initiatives.

Procedural corrections

Finally, the council addressed procedural issues, such as filling the Paphos municipal orchestra conductor position. Due to the former municipal secretary’s pre-retirement leave during the initial selection, the interview process will be repeated with the deputy municipal secretary to ensure compliance with proper procedures.
