The wife of Paphos Mayor Phaedon Phaedonos has publicly responded to reports portraying her as a victim of domestic violence, firmly rejecting the allegations.
In a post on social media, she denied claims made in a video by Annie Alexui, who presented documents she alleged were related to an incident of domestic violence involving the mayor and his spouse.
“The family is facing a coordinated attack, clearly aimed at politically harming my husband,” she wrote. “I regret being forced to intervene publicly in order to protect my family from malice and gossip.”
She stressed that she does not require protection or “self-appointed guardians with ulterior motives,” adding that those who know her personally and professionally are aware that she is not a victim.
“We have lived harmoniously with my husband for 20 years,” she stated.
“I am proud of him,” she says
In her post, she described Mayor Phaedonos as “a wonderful person, dignified and honest,” noting that she is proud of him and the battles he chooses to fight.
“I ask everyone to keep political games away from me and my family,” she concluded.
Police launch ex officio investigation
Meanwhile, the Cyprus Police have launched an ex officio investigation into the alleged assault claims involving the Paphos mayor, which surfaced publicly in recent days.
Speaking on the television programme Protoselido, Christodoulos Konsolos from the Police Press Office confirmed that authorities initiated the investigation on Sunday.
“In recent days, information containing sensitive personal data has been circulating,” he said. “All of this falls under legislation concerning violence in the family.”
He added that if evidence emerges that helps clarify the situation, police will publicly announce the findings.
