The 32-year-old mother accused in the case of the dead girl found in Paleo Faliro is to appear before the investigating magistrate today, Wednesday (6 August).
She is scheduled to be brought before the magistrate at 11:00. Until now, she has been held at the Flisvos port police station.
The 32-year-old continues to insist the child’s death was an accident, saying she could never have harmed her daughter. She now claims definitively that the girl was already dead when she left her on Edem Beach in Paleo Faliro. She is therefore expected to deny the charges of intentional drowning and premeditated homicide.
Authorities are also examining her mobile phone, as there is information suggesting she tried the very next day to find a way to return to her home country, Algeria, stating she had only two children.
Lawyer for 32-year-old: she maintains her innocence- final coroner’s report will be crucial
The 32-year-old continues to plead not guilty to charges of intentional homicide and repeated abuse of her 3-year-old daughter, who was found dead from drowning on a Paleo Faliro beach.
Speaking to ERTNews about the case, her lawyer, Evita Varela, stated that her client is “categorically innocent of the offences attributed to her, particularly intentional homicide, and she does not accept the charge of drowning.”
Varela stressed that the outcome of the case depends heavily on the coroner’s findings: “The conclusion of the forensic report, meaning the histological and laboratory tests, will be decisive. As of now, there is no final conclusion. At this stage, we can only wait for the final report.”
Addressing reports that the 32-year-old allegedly disposed of the clothes she was wearing on the day the girl was found drowned, the lifting of her phone’s privacy, and her supposed plan to flee abroad, Varela said these points are not supported by the case file she has received.
“The copies I obtained yesterday of the criminal case file do not include such elements. I am not saying it is misinformation, but I cannot confirm it,” she noted.
Finally, when asked why the mother did not go to a public hospital when the child was injured, Varela acknowledged: “It is a very serious omission, one she also recognises- that she did not immediately call for help. Of course, she wants to explain and clarify the case and assist the authorities. She wants to take responsibility for what she has done, but not for something she did not do.”
