Owner of Violanta biscuits remanded after Trikala factory explosion

The owner of the Violanta biscuit factory, Konstantinos Tziortziotis, was remanded in custody following his court hearing over the deadly explosion at the Trikala factory, which claimed the lives of five female employees.

Court hearing details

Tziortziotis’s hearing lasted four hours and 45 minutes. During the session, the investigating magistrate presented videos and photos of the explosion. Tziortziotis expressed shock and stated that he had not been aware of the risks at the site, noting that his children had played there.

Responsibility and statements

The owner identified staff members who signed off on procedures and named collaborators responsible for various aspects of factory operations. He reportedly said he had learned about unusual odours at the factory only much later, indicating a delay in addressing safety concerns.
