Over 200 earthquakes in 48 hours between Santorini and Amorgos

Date:

The Permanent Scientific Committee for Seismic Hazard Assessment and the Permanent Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Arc of the Hellenic Association of Geophysical and Astronomical Sciences (OASP) met again on Sunday due to the increased seismic activity in the sea region of Anydros, between Thira and Amorgos.

  The committees decided that:

1. Seismic activity within the caldera remains in decline.

2. The seismic sequence continues to be elevated in the last 48 hours with more than 200 earthquakes in the Anydros area, between Thira and Amorgos (earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of 4.5).

3. The current seismic activity in the Anydros island area is due to submarine faults with a NE-SW direction and is not related to volcanic activity.

4. The Committees recommend the following preventive measures:

a. Schools to remain closed on Monday 03/02/2025 in Thira, Anafi, Ios and Amorgos.

b. Citizens should: – avoid large gatherings inside buildings. – avoid approaching abandoned buildings. – avoid accessing and staying in the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfou and the Old Port of Fira.- proceed with the removal of dangerous elements in their buildings and the draining of the swimming pools.
