Opposition to unaccompanied minors facilities in Municipality of Amathus

Date:

The Municipality of Amathus has reacted against the Deputy Ministry of Welfare’s plan to establish facilities for unaccompanied minors, a plan that now seems to have changed.

The mayor of Amathus, Kyriakos Xydias, stated in an interview with Protoselido that “we are no longer talking about unaccompanied minors. We are talking about a plan from the Deputy Ministry that has changed many forms over the 15 months we’ve been discussing it and has caused significant tension, as local concerns were not taken into account and there was insufficient communication about what was being planned.”

He mentioned that he had a lengthy meeting with the Deputy Minister on Monday, noting that “despite our disagreements, we expressed the Municipal Council’s position, and the discussion allowed room for dialogue. We expressed our opposition, while the Deputy Ministry clarified many issues. From the initial plan, the matter of Migration has been entirely removed as it is handled by another Deputy Ministry. What the Deputy Ministry of Welfare is planning now are only facilities for children under the legal protection of the State.”
