Operation Guardian by British Bases: 12 arrests for drugs and weapons

Date:

The British Bases Police have announced a total of 12 arrests following four weeks of intensified policing at Lady’s Mile and Kourion beaches.

Authorities said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety and strengthen security at two of the island’s busiest coastal areas.

Drug and weapons arrest over weekend

One of the latest arrests involved a 34-year-old Bulgarian man, who described himself as homeless and was allegedly found driving under the influence of drugs last weekend.

During a search of his vehicle, police reportedly discovered a small quantity of drugs believed to be intended for personal use, along with a number of prohibited sharp kitchen knives, a sickle and a wooden club.

The suspect was arrested immediately and remains in custody until his court hearing scheduled for 6 July.

Additional offences recorded

Police also reported that 20 drivers were booked for less serious traffic offences, while 60 people received written warnings related to road traffic violations and the use of speedboats.

In addition, two individuals were referred to the Akrotiri Bases Administration after allegedly operating without the required professional licence.

Heavy visitor numbers at beaches

Authorities estimate that Lady’s Mile and Kourion beaches attract more than 7,000 visitors per day during weekends.

According to Chief Inspector Tony Demetriou, public safety and maintaining a strong sense of security among visitors remain key priorities.

He said Operation Guardian has already delivered positive results, adding that the proactive approach has contributed to keeping beaches safe while increasing confidence among the thousands of visitors using the area.

The British Bases Police Marine Unit has also maintained a strong presence and has so far carried out inspections on 113 boats and jet skis.
