Paphos Deputy Mayor Angelos Onisiforou assumed duties as acting mayor today following developments concerning Mayor Phedonas Phedonos, who has been automatically suspended pending the completion of investigations and court proceedings against him.
Statement outside City Hall
Speaking to RIK outside Paphos City Hall, Onisiforou expressed regret over the situation and stressed that authorities must be allowed to carry out their work. He said he hopes the truth will emerge quickly so calm can return to the city.
He added that municipal services continue to operate normally without disruption.
Contact with the suspended mayor
Asked whether he had communicated with Phedonos, Onisiforou said he had not done so but would make contact if necessary.
Regarding the removal of the mayor’s personal belongings from his office, he said he had not been aware in advance. He noted that the police presence aimed to prevent any document leaks and confirmed that officers remained at the site overnight before leaving in the morning.
Concerns over repeated investigations
Responding to questions about this being the third criminal investigation involving Paphos City Hall, Onisiforou said the situation made him uneasy. He expressed hope that the cycle would end here, adding that he does not wish to become “the fourth”.
