ON THIS DAY: the start of WWI (1914)

On this day in 1914, the First World War began- a conflict unlike any before it, and one that reshaped the modern world.

Austria‑Hungary’s declaration of war on Serbia set off a chain reaction of alliances and ultimatums. Within weeks, the great powers of Europe were drawn into what was first called “The Great War”, later known as the First World War.

Unlike earlier conflicts, the start of World War I marked the dawn of modern, industrialised warfare. Rapid advances in weaponry- machine guns, heavy artillery, poison gas, tanks, and aircraft- made the war less about men and more about machines. The result was unprecedented carnage. Long, static trench lines turned battlefields into killing grounds, where mass casualties came for minimal territorial gain.

The war also marked a turning point in how conflict was understood. Soldiers returned with invisible wounds, giving rise to the term “shell shock”- what we now recognise as post-traumatic stress disorder. The sense of honour once attached to warfare was replaced by trauma, disillusionment, and the devastating realisation of what modern conflict could do.

When the armistice came in November 1918, many hoped this had been “The War to End All Wars.” But the punitive terms of the Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, sowed the seeds of resentment in Germany and instability in Europe. Those seeds would grow into the Second World War just two decades later.

The start of World War I left more than 16 million dead, toppled empires, shifted borders, and changed the political, social, and cultural landscape of the 20th century. Over a century later, its legacy is still visible in the alliances, conflicts, and global order of today.
