Every year on March 14, the world celebrates International Mathematics Day, widely known as Pi Day, honoring the mathematical constant π (pi), whose first digits are 3.14.
The day was officially proclaimed by UNESCO in 2019 with the aim of highlighting the importance of mathematics in everyday life and its role in science, technology and innovation.
Across the globe, schools, universities and scientific institutions organize educational activities, competitions and events that promote interest in mathematics. The date 3/14 symbolizes the number π, which represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and is one of the most important constants in mathematics.
Beyond the celebrations, International Mathematics Day serves as a reminder of the fundamental role mathematics plays in fields such as engineering, medicine, artificial intelligence and space exploration.
