A landmark for the centennial of the French Revolution
On 31 March 1889, the Eiffel Tower was officially unveiled in Paris during a ceremony attended by dignitaries and marked by awards and demonstrations. Designed by renowned engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower served as the centerpiece for the Exposition Universelle, celebrating 100 years since the French Revolution. Its debut captured global attention, signalling a bold leap in architectural and engineering achievement.
Engineering marvel of its time
Standing 300 metres tall, the Eiffel Tower became the tallest man-made structure in the world, a record it held for 41 years. Constructed from wrought iron, the project required over 18,000 metal pieces and 2.5 million rivets. Its intricate lattice design not only ensured stability but also demonstrated the elegance and potential of industrial-era engineering.
Early criticism and public reaction
Initially, the tower divided opinion. Many Parisians condemned it as an eyesore that clashed with the city’s classical beauty. Artists and writers publicly criticised the “giant black skeleton” dominating the Champ de Mars. Eiffel defended the structure, highlighting its technological ingenuity and the new possibilities it offered for modern architecture.
Visitor experience at the opening
During the opening, visitors could ascend multiple levels of the tower, enjoying panoramic views of Paris that were unprecedented at the time. The structure exemplified French technical skill and served as a symbol of progress and innovation during a period of rapid industrialisation.
Legacy of the Eiffel Tower
Over time, the Eiffel Tower transformed from a controversial project into an enduring emblem of Parisian identity and a global architectural icon. Its inauguration in 1889 marked a milestone in architectural history, illustrating how ambition, creativity, and engineering excellence could redefine a city skyline and leave a lasting legacy.
