ON THIS DAY: Cyprus National Guard founded (1964)

Date:

The anniversary of the Cyprus National Guard is being marked today as the force celebrates 62 years since its establishment.

According to the General Staff of the National Guard (GEEF), the force was officially formed on 4 June 1964 following a decision by the Council of Ministers, implementing the provisions of the National Guard Law passed by the House of Representatives just days earlier.

Central role in Cyprus defence

The National Guard stated that its history is closely linked with the history of Cyprus, with citizens participating in the country’s defence effort through active service, reserve forces and the National Guard itself.

It stressed that the force continues to operate as a modern, capable and strong deterrent with high operational readiness, able to respond to contemporary security challenges.

Commitment to mission and security

In its announcement, GEEF reaffirmed its commitment to its founding mission, as defined in the original decree, which includes responding to any actions directed against the independence or territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, or threatening the safety of citizens and their property.

The Cyprus National Guard highlights 62 years of continuous service and adaptation to evolving defence requirements, the statement added.

Continued operational readiness

Today, the National Guard describes itself as a modern military force maintaining strong deterrence capabilities and readiness to respond to any threats.

Officials said the force remains fully aligned with its mission to safeguard the sovereignty and security of the Republic of Cyprus.
