On 4 August 1944, Anne Frank was arrested in Amsterdam after German Security Police, known as the Grüne Polizei, discovered the hiding place where she and seven others had lived for more than two years.
The raid on the Secret Annex came after an informer alerted the authorities. The identity of the person who provided the tip-off has never been confirmed.
Anne Frank and others were taken into custody
Anne Frank, her sister Margot, their parents Otto and Edith Frank, and four other people hiding with them were arrested by the German authorities.
The group had been concealed in a hidden section of a building at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam since July 1942, attempting to escape persecution during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
After their arrest, they were first taken to a detention centre before being transferred to the Westerbork transit camp in the Netherlands.
The fate of Anne Frank
In September 1944, Anne and Margot Frank were deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and later moved to Bergen-Belsen.
Both sisters died there in early 1945, shortly before the camp was liberated. Anne Frank was 15 years old.
Her diary, which she wrote while in hiding, was later published by her father, Otto Frank, the only member of the family who survived the Holocaust. The book became one of the most widely read accounts of life under Nazi persecution.
A lasting historical record
The arrest of Anne Frank remains a significant moment in Holocaust history, marking the discovery of one of the most famous hiding places of the Second World War.
The Secret Annex in Amsterdam has since become a museum dedicated to Anne Frank’s life and the memory of the millions of people killed during the Holocaust.
