ON THIS DAY: Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” premieres (1952)

Date:

On 25 November 1952, Agatha Christie’s murder-mystery play The Mousetrap premiered at the Ambassadors Theatre in London’s West End. The production featured Richard Attenborough as Detective Sergeant Trotter and Sheila Sim as Mollie Ralston.

Initially, Christie anticipated a modest run of eight months. However, the play defied expectations, becoming the world’s longest-running play. It transferred to St. Martin’s Theatre on 25 March 1974, where it continues to captivate audiences.

The Mousetrap has become a cornerstone of British theatre, celebrated for its intricate plot and unexpected twist ending. Audiences are traditionally asked to keep the ending a secret, preserving the mystery for future theatre-goers.

As of February 2024, the play has surpassed 29,500 performances, a testament to its enduring appeal and Christie’s storytelling prowess.
