The Occupied Municipalities Committee will continue its sessions with the participation of the acting mayor and deputy mayor of Lefkoniko, following the Interior Ministry’s decision to suspend Mayor Pieris Gypsiotis.
Committee respects authorities’ decisions
The committee’s president, Famagusta Mayor Simos Ioannou, told CNA that the committee fully respects the decisions of the Interior Ministry, the police and the Law Office and will follow the progress of the case.
“I fully agree with the Interior Minister’s decisions. We will continue our work as the Occupied Municipalities Committee, now including the acting mayor and deputy mayor of Lefkoniko,” he said.
Ioannou added that the committee does not interfere with judicial matters. “We respect the decisions of the police, the Attorney General and the Interior Minister. Investigations and the court process will show the outcome,” he stated.
Committee work continues
Ioannou assured that the committee will continue its work to achieve its objectives and that the acting mayor of Lefkoniko will participate in all sessions.
Yesterday, the Interior Ministry suspended the mayors of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, and Lefkoniko, Pieris Gypsiotis, until the completion of investigations or the full trial, following criminal allegations against them.
The Ministry, after receiving updates from the authorities regarding criminal investigations, invoked Article 113 of the Municipalities Law, which allows the suspension of council members or mayors under investigation for offences punishable by more than three years’ imprisonment.
