Nurses call for retirement at 60 due to shift strain

The Cyprus Nurses Union (PASYNO) has officially submitted a request for the retirement age to be lowered to 60 for nurses working night and rotating shifts. The union argues that nurses have reached their physical and mental limits, and Cyprus must align with European standards for high-strain professions.

Speaking on behalf of the union, General Secretary Savvas Iacovou stated that nearly all nurses retiring at 65 suffer from health problems, adding, “We have no strength left. Many colleagues over 60 can no longer meet 100% of their duties, affecting the quality of care provided.” He cited practices in countries such as Italy, France, and Spain, where nurses retire at 60, urging Cyprus to follow suit.

Similar proposals for early retirement have also emerged in other sectors. The police union has submitted a voluntary exit plan, suggesting retirement from age 55 for regular officers and 56 for senior ranks. Police union representative Nikos Loizides noted that the ageing force, with an average age of nearly 50, is facing operational challenges. The proposal is now under review by the Chief of Police and the Minister of Justice.
