A case of sexual abuse described as the largest scandal of its kind in Norway’s history has caused outrage in the country. The trial involves the dark actions of a gynaecologist accused of raping dozens of women over a period of 20 years.
According to the Daily Mail, 55-year-old gynaecologist Arne Bye, who worked for many years at the municipal clinic in the small town of Frosta, is accused of raping 87 women and recording videos of these sexual assaults, which allegedly took place both in his clinic and at the victims’ homes.
Bye faces charges of abusing his position to achieve sexual contact with a total of 94 women, including two underage girls. The oldest victim was 67, while the youngest were 14 and 15.
The defendant has admitted guilt in three cases of rape and 35 instances of abuse of position. He faces a maximum prison sentence of 21 years.
Shocking Evidence and Videos
Police seized over 6,000 hours of recorded video footage, much of which pertains to gynecological exams recorded without the patients’ knowledge.
According to the charges, Bye reportedly used objects such as a “deodorant,” a “bottle,” and an unidentified cylindrical object during these exams without any medical justification.
One woman testified in the Trøndelag court, describing her experience as extremely painful, saying she “thought she would die.”
Another victim, referred to as “Victim 18” during the trial, testified last Wednesday that she visited Bye for a sore throat but ended up undergoing a gynaecological exam, despite having no symptoms warranting such an examination.

A Community in Shock
The small town of Frosta, with just 2,600 residents, has been shaken by the case. Bye was a prominent figure in the local community and had served as a doctor for many residents.
During the trial, detailed and disturbing video evidence filmed by Bye himself was presented. Prosecutor Richard Haugen Lyng highlighted that these recordings of the assaults make the case particularly unique.
Bye claimed in court that he recorded the exams to protect himself from potential lawsuits and insisted he had never watched the footage, except when required for the trial.
According to local media, footage involving “Victim 18” shows Bye setting up cameras before examining the woman.
Questions About Case Handling
The first complaint against Bye’s misconduct was made in 2006 by another doctor at Levanger Hospital. A former patient of Bye had sought further medical assistance there and revealed that Bye had massaged her genital area during an examination. Despite her claims that other women had similar experiences, Bye denied the accusations and faced no consequences.
The police began investigating Bye’s actions in 2022 after new complaints emerged via healthcare services. He continued working until charges were formally brought against him in 2023.
Despite the serious allegations, Bye has not been detained. Authorities have stated that they are monitoring the situation and see no immediate need for his arrest at this time.
