No turtle nests were recorded in Lady’s Mile this year, with the foundation monitoring the Limassol beach describing the 2026 season as the worst in the past decade.
The foundation said volunteers carried out daily morning monitoring for the 10th consecutive year, from mid-May until the end of September. They recorded nesting attempts, turtle tracks and potential threats to protected species.
It also raised concerns about what it described as a lack of enforcement by the British Bases Administration, despite repeated appeals to apply the relevant legislation.
Foundation reports concerns over beach activities
According to the foundation, the British Bases Administration was informed about more than 85 events organised by certain restaurants in the area, but none was prevented.
The foundation also said that, during none of the 130 days of monitoring, did it observe the complete removal of sunbeds, umbrellas and tables from the beach during the legally required hours.
Its complaints also covered the continued presence of heavy sunbeds and other infrastructure, as well as floating inflatables and water sports activities in an area where it said restrictions apply.
The foundation argued that these activities and structures raised concerns about the protection of the beach and its suitability for sea turtle nesting.
Call for stronger protection of Lady’s Mile
The foundation called on the British Bases Administration to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to violations and introduce effective measures to protect Lady’s Mile.
It stressed that enforcing the law was the responsibility of the competent authorities.
The absence of nests this year marks a worrying outcome for the monitored beach, according to the foundation. However, the information provided did not establish a single cause for the lack of nesting or confirm that the reported beach activities were directly responsible.
