Nicosia Municipality has intensified mosquito control measures following recent rainfall, focusing on areas where breeding sites have been identified or residents have submitted complaints.
The work is carried out daily, including weekends, using appropriate and approved treatments.
Focus on rivers and stagnant water
Intensive mosquito control operations are being conducted along the channels of the Klimos, Kateva and Kotsirka rivers, as well as at drainage grilles in covered sections where breeding sites have been detected.
Interventions are also taking place at stormwater drains and other locations where stagnant water has accumulated.
Particular attention has been given to Engomi. Work has included the Klimos area from the Lakatamia boundary to Agios Dometios, locations near the cemetery and State Fair, and the open channel along Iroon Street.
Municipal teams have also carried out inspections and interventions at grilles along the Klimos pedestrian walkway and around 28th October Avenue.
Residents urged to check properties
Municipal services are systematically inspecting known potential breeding sites, including homes with abandoned swimming pools, building lift shafts, open channels and other locations where stagnant water can collect.
All complaints submitted by residents are also being investigated. During each inspection, municipal teams check not only the reported property but also neighbouring premises to identify possible breeding sites.
According to municipal inspections, around 60% of cases involve a mosquito breeding site either at the property where the complaint was made or at a neighbouring property.
Small amounts of stagnant water can create breeding sites
The municipality is urging residents to regularly check their homes, gardens and outdoor areas and remove any potential sources of stagnant water.
Particular attention should be given to buckets and other containers, plant saucers, pet and bird water bowls, small ponds, abandoned swimming pools, gutters and any other objects or areas capable of holding even small amounts of water.
Breeding sites can also develop at construction sites when water becomes trapped in lift shafts.
Public cooperation remains important
The municipality said mosquito control is a matter of public health, hygiene and quality of life and requires cooperation from residents.
Nicosia Municipality and the Health Services will continue to monitor the situation and carry out targeted interventions where necessary.
