Police stop and attempted escape

A 29-year-old man was arrested in Nicosia for the instant offence of illegal possession of drugs. The suspect is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court for a remand hearing.

According to the Police Communications Branch, around 12:20 yesterday, while Nicosia Traffic Police were conducting checks, they stopped a vehicle driven by the 29-year-old and requested him to undergo a drug test. The suspect refused.

During a search of the vehicle’s glove compartment, authorities discovered a small bag containing approximately two grams of cannabis. When officers attempted to arrest the suspect for the drug possession offence, he pushed two traffic officers and fled the scene.

Chase and seizure

The suspect was pursued by police, with warning shots fired into the air. During his escape, he dropped various items, which were later identified as four bags containing a total of 30 grams of cocaine.

Further police action

A subsequent search of the suspect’s vehicle by the Nicosia branch of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (ΥΚΑΝ) led to the seizure of five mobile phones, five bags of cannabis weighing a total of 30 grams, and €4,770 in cash.

The Nicosia Drug Law Enforcement Unit continues its investigations.
