A new website aims to help travellers avoid long waits and unexpected queues by forecasting congestion at Cyprus airports and recommending when to arrive before their flights.
Called CyBusy, the free service was created by Amit Meldassi, a frequent traveller who wanted a simple way to understand how busy an airport would be at the time of arrival.
The website currently focuses on Larnaca and Paphos airports and provides congestion forecasts for the next 72 hours.
Travellers can access the service through the CyBusy website.
How does CyBusy forecast airport congestion?
CyBusy uses scheduled flight information and a forecasting model to estimate passenger volumes and predict when queues are likely to form.
Meldassi stated that airport congestion can vary considerably depending on the flight and time of day. He said existing flight information does not necessarily answer the question passengers want addressed: what conditions they can expect when they reach the terminal.
The algorithm estimates the number of passengers expected on each flight and considers when those passengers are likely to arrive at the airport.
It then maps the expected arrivals into waves of passenger traffic in the hours before departure. When several waves overlap, congestion may increase.
The website uses these estimates to forecast airport busyness over the following 72 hours and recommend an arrival time for passengers who search for their specific flight.
Can the forecasts guarantee shorter queues?
CyBusy provides estimates rather than a guarantee of how long passengers will wait. Its predictions depend on the available information and the accuracy of its assumptions about passenger behaviour.
Meldassi said the model would improve as it collected more data. He is also using feedback from users to refine the algorithm and develop additional features.
Passengers can contribute by anonymously reporting how busy the airport is when they visit. These reports can give other travellers a better idea of the conditions on the ground.
The service is free to use, with the aim of making airport congestion information accessible to everyone.
A project developed by one person
Meldassi developed CyBusy independently, and the website went live towards the end of September 2026.
A lawyer by profession, he stated that he was interested in how modern technology, including artificial intelligence, could turn an idea into a practical service.
He identified predicting passenger arrival patterns and understanding how different departure waves overlap as some of the most challenging aspects of the project.
Although the website could eventually expand to other countries, Meldassi said his immediate priority was to make the forecasts as accurate and useful as possible for passengers travelling through Larnaca and Paphos airports.
For travellers, CyBusy offers another source of information to consider when planning their journey to the airport. Passengers should still follow their airline’s check-in and boarding requirements and allow sufficient time for unexpected delays.
