New terrorism arrests as suspect admits Israelis were the target

Date:

Police have carried out two additional arrests of individuals residing in the Larnaca district who are allegedly linked to an ongoing terrorism investigation, according to information obtained by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). The Larnaca District Court on Friday issued eight-day detention orders for both suspects.

According to the same sources, two other individuals, aged 32 and 38, who had been arrested earlier in May in connection with terrorism-related offences, appeared before the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni on Saturday. During closed-door proceedings, their detention orders were extended for a further eight days.

Sources further indicated that one of the suspects allegedly admitted that “Israelis would have been the target,” while investigations are ongoing to determine how and where the planned attacks would have been carried out.

The two men, both third-country nationals, were arrested in Larnaca following the collection and assessment of intelligence information.

According to a police statement issued on May 22, searches were subsequently conducted under court warrants at two residences used by the 32-year-old suspect in the Larnaca district. Investigators discovered and seized various items, including materials that could be used in the manufacture of explosives, the possession of which is prohibited.

Sources said that explosive-making materials, including ammonium nitrate, were found at the two properties located in Governor’s Beach and the Kamares area of Larnaca, both reportedly linked to the 32-year-old suspect. The evidence has been sent for specialised forensic examination.

Police investigations remain ongoing in an effort to determine whether the suspects had additional accomplices.
