New provisions on traffic fines in Cyprus came into force on 6 March, introducing changes to penalties related to red light violations at camera-controlled junctions.
Changes to red light violation penalties
Speaking on Sigma TV programme “Protoselido”, Traffic Department officer Tasos Asikkis said the new provisions took effect following a decision by the Council of Ministers and do not apply retroactively.
He explained that the changes affect the out-of-court settlement procedure for drivers who violate a red traffic signal at photo-enforced intersections.
Until 5 March, drivers who entered a pedestrian crossing after the red light activated could receive an €300 fine and three penalty points.
Reduced fine for pedestrian crossing violation
From 6 March, the same offence now carries a reduced out-of-court fine of €85, while the three penalty points remain in place.
Asikkis said the law now introduces a clearer distinction between different types of red light violations, allowing stricter penalties when a vehicle enters the junction beyond the pedestrian crossing after the signal turns red.
Different penalties depending on offence
He clarified that the most severe penalties will apply when a driver proceeds into the intersection itself in violation of the red light.
Regarding violations of the mandatory stop line at camera-controlled junctions, the existing penalty remains unchanged, with a €25 fine and no penalty points imposed.
