Fidias Panayiotou, a Member of the European Parliament, is under scrutiny by the European Public Prosecutor following allegations of misusing public funds. The investigation focuses on a property he rented, which was registered for residential rather than professional use.
Investigation targets property claims
The property in question is a villa featuring four bedrooms and a swimming pool. Authorities are examining whether European funds were improperly spent in relation to the rental agreement and its declared purpose.
New data privacy complaint filed
At the same time, Fidias Panayiotou faces a separate complaint for breaching personal data regulations. The case involves a video in which the MEP referred to individuals with intellectual disabilities using a derogatory term. The athlete featured in the video requested, through the Cyprus Confederation of Organisations of People with Disabilities (KYSOA), that his image be removed. The request was reportedly ignored.
The European Commissioner for Data Protection now reviews the complaint, adding to the legal challenges facing the MEP.
