Cyprus authorities have warned the public after new cannabinoids were detected in products seized from a shop selling CBD and related items.
The Cyprus National Addictions Authority (NAAC) said the products were identified during an inspection conducted in cooperation with the Cyprus Police, Pharmaceutical Services and Health Services.
The seized items included e-cigarette liquids, cigarettes containing plant material and other herbal products.
Laboratory tests detected several new cannabinoids, including six different substances in a single e-cigarette liquid.
Health risks remain unclear
The authority expressed concern that products perceived by consumers as low-risk may contain powerful psychoactive cannabinoids without their knowledge.
It warned that the effects of many of these substances on humans have not been sufficiently studied. The effects of the specific mixture identified in the e-cigarette liquid are also unknown.
Potential effects include a rapid heartbeat, severe drowsiness, confusion, anxiety, panic attacks and, in serious cases, poisoning or psychotic symptoms.
“The fact that a product is sold in a shop does not guarantee its safety. Its appearance, smell or name are not enough to determine what it contains,” the authority said.
Public urged to avoid products of unknown composition
The NAAC advised consumers to avoid products whose composition is unknown and to stop using any item suspected of containing such substances.
It also issued the following safety advice:
- Do not combine these products with alcohol or other substances.
- Do not drive after using them.
- Keep them out of children’s reach.
- Seek medical assistance if you feel unwell.
- Tell healthcare professionals which product you used and keep its packaging.
The authority also urged the public to call an ambulance immediately if someone loses consciousness, experiences breathing difficulties or suffers seizures. The person should not be left alone.
