Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the Israel Defense Forces to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon, according to his office, amid escalating cross-border tensions.
The directive was issued during a visit to Israeli troops deployed in the area, where Netanyahu referred to both surface and underground infrastructure allegedly used by Hezbollah’s military wing.
Military escalation in southern Lebanon
Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces must act immediately when threats are identified, instructing troops to ensure that no targets are left intact.
He also ruled out withdrawing Israeli forces from the area until Hezbollah is fully disarmed and what he described as the threat is eliminated.
The Israeli leader described Hezbollah as a key component of what he called the “axis of resistance” aligned with Iran, claiming the group has suffered significant losses and reduced rocket capacity.
Rising regional tensions
The comments come amid continued tensions along the Israel–Lebanon border, where exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have intensified in recent months.
Hezbollah and the Lebanese government consider Israel’s actions in southern Lebanon a violation of sovereignty and international law, describing the presence of Israeli forces in parts of the territory as an occupation.
Reports from Lebanese media estimate that Israel currently controls around 620 square kilometres of southern Lebanon, roughly 6% of the country’s territory.
