Netanyahu joins Trump’s global “Board of Peace”

Trump’s “Board of Peace” explained

The “Board of Peace” is an international organisation designed to promote stability and lawful governance in conflict zones. Trump will serve as chairman. He will have exclusive authority to create, modify, or dissolve subsidiary entities.

Member states will hold three-year renewable terms. Permanent membership is possible for countries contributing $1 billion to the board.

Netanyahu’s Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Morocco, and Vietnam have agreed to participate. Several countries, including Norway, France, and Sweden, declined due to concerns about the board’s structure.

Gaza Executive Board controversy

Trump also established a Gaza Executive Board to oversee reconstruction and demilitarisation. Members include Jared Kushner, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, and other international figures.

Nickolay Mladenov, former UN Middle East envoy, will represent the board on the ground in Gaza. He will coordinate with a Palestinian technocratic government. This government will restore public services, rebuild institutions, and stabilise daily life.

Netanyahu’s office stated that the Gaza board’s composition “was not coordinated with Israel and runs contrary to its policy.” The inclusion of Turkey and Qatar raised tensions.

Challenges ahead in Gaza

Phase one of Trump’s peace plan achieved a ceasefire, an exchange of hostages, partial Israeli withdrawal, and increased humanitarian aid.

Phase two faces major obstacles. Hamas has previously refused to disarm without an independent Palestinian state. Israel has not committed to a full withdrawal.

The ceasefire remains fragile. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reports over 460 Palestinian deaths from Israeli strikes. Israel reports three soldiers killed in Palestinian attacks.

The war began with Hamas’ October 2023 attack, which killed about 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages. Israel responded with a military campaign that killed over 71,550 people in Gaza.
