Netanyahu admits to authorising bomber attack in Lebanon

Date:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has, for the first time, admitted that he authorised the bombing attack carried out in September against Lebanon’s Hezbollah, his spokesperson Omer Dostri told AFP.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu stated that he gave the green light for this operation, which had not been claimed until now, Dostri said, confirming information reported by Israeli media.

Trapped devices, bombs, and wireless transmitters used by Hezbollah members exploded on 17 and 18 September in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as well as in southern and eastern Lebanon, strongholds of the Islamist organisation Hezbollah.

These explosions claimed the lives of 39 people, with nearly 3,000 others injured, according to Lebanese authorities.

Although this spectacular operation bore the hallmark of Mossad, Israel’s powerful foreign intelligence agency, Israel had not openly claimed responsibility for it nor commented on it.
