European defence readiness requires a comprehensive approach that takes into account challenges across all strategic areas directly affecting Europe’s security, Cyprus National Guard Chief Lt Gen Emmanouil Theodorou said at the 2nd European Conference of Chiefs of Defence and National Armaments Directors (CHOD/NAD) in Rome.
The conference was held on 21 and 22 September and focused on adapting European defence industrial production to the current defence needs of EU member states.
Faster development of defence capabilities
According to a statement from the Cyprus National Guard General Staff, military chiefs exchanged views on lessons emerging from modern conflicts, identified defence requirements and the ability of the European defence industry to meet them.
During his intervention, Theodorou said the new security environment requires reducing the time between the design, production and operational deployment of modern defence capabilities.
He said these capabilities should be adaptable and interoperable, while stressing that European defence readiness requires an approach that considers challenges across the strategic areas that directly affect Europe’s security.
Theodorou also held a series of meetings with counterparts on the sidelines of the conference, where issues of mutual interest were discussed.
