Must-watch films premiering in 2026

Date:

Wuthering Heights casting controversy

Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel already generates heated debate before its February 13 release. The trailer showcases Margot Robbie as Catherine “Cathy” Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as the dark-skinned orphan Heathcliff, prompting backlash from Brontë purists over casting and the film’s emphasized “raw sexiness.”

Social media critics argue Robbie appears too old for teenage Cathy while Elordi’s whiteness contradicts Heathcliff’s “dark-skinned gypsy” description central to themes of race and class prejudice. Fennell, whose LuckyChap Entertainment produced the film with Robbie, defends her vision as capturing the “primal, sexual” passion she felt reading at 14.

Owen Cooper plays young Heathcliff while Oscar nominee Hong Chau portrays loyal maid Nelly Dean. Supporting cast includes Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell.

Academy Award-winning cinematographer Linus Sandgren and Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran elevate production values.

Nolan’s epic Odyssey journey

Christopher Nolan adapts Homer’s ancient Greek poem The Odyssey with Matt Damon starring as warrior-king Odysseus on his perilous journey home from the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway plays patiently waiting wife Penelope while Tom Holland portrays their son Telemachus, Robert Pattinson appears as suitor Antinous, and Zendaya embodies goddess Athena.

Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal join the ensemble. Nolan merges large-scale battle action with vivid character drama, praising Odysseus’ “genius… cleverness, inventiveness.” Advance ticket sales broke records a year early. The film promises a Trojan horse sequence in sneak previews.

Releases July 17.

Gerwig’s Narnia prequel origins

Greta Gerwig directs Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the first chronological Narnia tale set 40 Earth years before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 16 years after the last Narnia film. Emma Mackey stars as evil White Witch Jadis alongside Carey Mulligan and Daniel Craig.

Following Barbie’s global success, Gerwig commands unlimited budget and creative freedom for this prequel exploring Narnia’s creation. The project taps Wicked-sized appetite for witch-centered fantasy franchises.

Scheduled for November 26 release.

Hunger Games prequel 24 years earlier

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping arrives November 20, set 24 years before the Katniss Everdeen saga and following 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Francis Lawrence returns as director after helming all prior Hunger Games films.

Ralph Fiennes plays young President Snow (previously Donald Sutherland), Jesse Plemons embodies Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character, Kieran Culkin takes Stanley Tucci’s role, Elle Fanning portrays Elizabeth Banks’ character, and Joseph Zada stars as Woody Harrelson’s future alcoholic mentor. The dystopian thriller continues televised youth death games entertainment.

Devil Wears Prada sequel

The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrives May 1, exactly 20 years after the original cultural phenomenon that launched Anne Hathaway to stardom. Meryl Streep reprises her unforgettable role as imperious fashion editor Miranda Priestly, inspired by Vogue’s Anna Wintour, now facing career threats from rival executive Emily Blunt, who evolved from Miranda’s downtrodden assistant to advertising power player wielding leverage over Runway magazine.

Hathaway returns as successful editor Andy Sachs, once Miranda’s beleaguered assistant, alongside Stanley Tucci as loyal art director Nigel. Fresh faces include Kenneth Branagh as Miranda’s husband, Patrick Brammall, Lucy Liu, and Justin Theroux. Original writer Aline Brosh McKenna and director David Frankel helm the sequel. Production drew paparazzi swarms across New York City, amplified when Streep and Tucci appeared in character at Milan Fashion Week’s Dolce & Gabbana front row alongside Wintour herself.

Toy Story 5 technology conflict

Pixar revives Woody and Buzz Lightyear for Toy Story 5 on June 19, seven years after Toy Story 4, under Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton’s helm with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen reprising iconic voices. The sharp premise confronts the toy world’s analog survivors against modern digital playthings as their young owner becomes obsessed with sleek tablet Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee.

This evolution brilliantly updates the franchise while returning to the original film’s core anxiety: beloved toys confronting obsolescence from shinier replacements.

Following Inside Out 2’s 2024 box office dominance over Pixar’s struggling originals, Toy Story 5 capitalizes on proven sequel strength to deliver emotional resonance and cutting-edge animation showcasing toys’ existential fears in the smartphone era.
