Suspect appears under heavy security
The prosecution submitted evidence on Wednesday before the Permanent Criminal Court sitting in Paphos in the case against a 58-year-old man accused of murdering Alexandros Antoniou.
The defendant was transported from Central Prisons to court under strict security measures.
The court scheduled the case for June 5, 2026, at 09:30 and ordered that the 58-year-old remain in custody.
Videos and expert reports submitted
Senior Counsel for the Republic Andreas Chatzikyrou submitted video footage allegedly showing how the incident unfolded, along with expert reports linked to the case.
The prosecution requested the continued detention of the accused, citing the seriousness of the offences and stressing that human life is the highest good. Concerns were also raised over a possible risk that the defendant could fail to appear before the court.
Defence raises no objection to detention
The defence lawyer, representing the law office of Elias Stefanou, did not object to the suspect remaining in custody.
The defence said it would review all witness material in order to gain a full understanding of the evidence.
At the next hearing, the accused is expected to state whether he pleads guilty or not guilty to the charges.
DNA evidence linked to suspect
The murder was committed on November 19 in the community of Konia in Paphos district.
According to the case file, genetic material found on the back of the driver’s seat where the victim had been sitting was identified by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics as belonging to the 58-year-old suspect.
A post-mortem examination found that the victim died from a wound inflicted with a sharp object to the carotid artery.
