Maria Loui, mother of Kyriakos Oxinos, has denied claims that the family was informed during the Investigative Committee on Takata airbags.
It is recalled that Loukas Chatzivasileiou, Director of the Pilakoutas Group- best known as the representative of BMW, as well as seven other companies- said in relation to the fatal accident in 2023 that the vehicle in question was registered to the victim’s grandmother, and had not been serviced at their workshops since 2011. As a result, he said, they had no up-to-date records to contact the owner. He added that the company had sent a letter and made two phone calls in 2020 without any response from the woman to whom the vehicle was registered.
Speaking on the show Protoselido, Maria Loui stressed:
“The car was not purchased in 2011 but in 1999. There are documents to prove this. Also, we were never informed. Not once. I’ve been saying this for two years. I only learned the word ‘Takata’ after the sudden loss of Kyriakos. For two years I’ve been asking why no statements were made, and why Mr. Pilakoutas waited to be called there to say it?”
She added:
“Anyone can claim they sent letters or made phone calls. But are there any actual proofs? If there are, I challenge Mr. Pilakoutas to present them—verified ones. I say that the company in question had both the landline and mobile number of Kyriakos’ father, because I know how our family operated.”
She emphasised that,
“In such a massive scandal, I didn’t expect anything better. It should also be taken into account that many citizens only started receiving notifications from February onwards—after the legislation was passed and companies were forced to begin informing the public. What I also want to highlight is that the specific vehicle they claim we were informed about appeared on the TOM (Department of Road Transport) recall list in February 2025. TOM stated that the lists came from the dealerships themselves. And this car was not among the immobilised vehicles—it was in the list of 89,000 still on the road. These are facts—not just statements.”
She concluded by saying she has proof that individuals she knows personally were contacted about vehicles from the same company in the past two years, and that many only received notification in February 2025.
