Moldova president Sandu in historic Cyprus visit

Date:

Official welcome at Presidential Palace

President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed Moldova’s President Maia Sandu to the Presidential Palace on Thursday morning. He described the visit as historic; the first by a Moldovan head of state in 22 years.

A military honour guard greeted President Sandu. The national anthems of Cyprus and Moldova played, and she laid a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III.

Bilateral talks underway

The leaders first held a one-on-one meeting. President Christodoulides highlighted the timing: the visit comes just 19 days before Cyprus assumes the EU Council Presidency.

He reaffirmed Cyprus’s full respect for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “During our Presidency and beyond, Cyprus will remain a strong supporter of your European path,” he stated.

Christodoulides praised Moldova’s clear European orientation and ongoing reforms. He pledged maximum effort for substantial progress in Moldova’s EU accession process.

President Sandu’s response

President Sandu thanked Cyprus for the warm welcome and consistent support. She expressed confidence in a successful Cypriot EU Presidency.

“Moldova places great hopes in your Presidency,” she said, noting EU membership as her country’s top national priority.

She highlighted reforms underway to meet EU standards and Moldova’s resilience against external pressures, including Russian interference in recent elections. Sandu stressed her government’s commitment to democracy and sovereignty as part of the free world.

The leaders are holding expanded talks covering bilateral relations and Moldova’s EU integration.
