European naval forces have moved into the Eastern Mediterranean in recent hours to strengthen Cyprus defence as concerns grow over potential Iranian drone and missile threats.
French and Greek warships now operate around the island as part of a defensive posture, while a German frigate remains stationed off Lebanon under a United Nations mission. At the same time, a US carrier strike group led by the USS Gerald R. Ford continues military operations linked to the wider regional conflict.
European warships strengthen Cyprus defence
According to Itamilradar, several European naval units have formally joined efforts to support Cyprus defence following the latest escalation in regional tensions.
Among the vessels currently operating near the island are the French frigate FS Languedoc and Greek Navy ships “Psara” and “Kimon”.
These ships carry advanced radar and air defence systems capable of detecting and potentially intercepting drones and cruise missiles. Their presence around Cyprus expands the island’s defensive perimeter against possible Iranian aerial threats.
Cyprus has increasingly become a key logistics hub and evacuation platform for Western countries operating in the Middle East, making Cyprus defence a growing priority as the regional crisis evolves.
Additional European deployments in the region
France is also sending the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its accompanying strike group towards the Levant. Spain has meanwhile announced plans to deploy the air defence frigate Cristóbal Colón to the region.
Germany’s frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen plays a different role. The vessel currently operates off the coast of Lebanon as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) maritime task force.
Its mission includes supporting the Lebanese Navy and monitoring maritime traffic to prevent the illegal transfer of weapons.
US carrier strike group active in operations
Further south in the Eastern Mediterranean, the US Navy carrier strike group centred on the USS Gerald R. Ford continues active military operations linked to Iran and the defence of Israel.
According to the report, one of the American destroyers operating north of the carrier – possibly the USS Oscar Austin – may have intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile that had been launched towards Cyprus.
However, no additional reports confirming the incident have appeared online so far.
The Ford strike group provides a powerful air and missile defence umbrella by combining carrier-based aircraft with Aegis-equipped destroyers capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
