Lincoln Waites group preserves the Crying Christmas ritual

Date:

The City of Lincoln Waites perform the ancient Crying Christmas ritual, dating back to medieval times. Group member Lesley Clarke explains that the 15 verses announce the start of Christmas, urging good behavior toward others, including the poor and royalty. Performers follow “Mr Mayor’s commandments” during festivities.

The original Waites served as the city’s official band from the 1400s. Modern group reformed in 2007 wears 15th-century costumes and plays instruments from the King Richard III era.

Festive performances at historic church

Waites now stage the ritual at St Mary Magdalene church, playing over 500-year-old music. Originally, they paraded from Newport Arch to Stonebow Guildhall, reading cries at stops.

Clarke describes it as bringing medieval life alive through authentic clothes, music, and customs. “History is interesting and important,” she said, adding lessons from past living.
