Limassol teen intubated following crash after running red light

Date:

A 17-year-old teen remains intubated at Limassol General Hospital after a motorcycle crash with a car on Christodoulou Chatzipavlou seafront road on Thursday evening.

Limassol Traffic Police said the crash happened at around 19:40 when a 24-year-old driver travelling east tried to turn right towards the parking area of the coastal multifunctional park at the embankment. The car cut off a motorcycle travelling west, critically injuring the 17-year-old rider, who was not wearing a protective helmet. Paramedics rushed him by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital.

Serious head injuries and critical care

Doctors confirmed that the teenager suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. Medical staff intubated him, and he remains in critical condition in hospital.

Police found that the off-road motorcycle had no lights and that the rider had no licence, insurance or roadworthiness certificate. Witnesses also said he was travelling at high speed and had earlier run a red traffic light near the city’s public garden.

Driver expected to be arrested

The 24-year-old driver took both alcohol and drug tests, which returned negative results. Police plan to arrest her later today to assist the ongoing investigation.

Limassol Traffic Police continue to examine the circumstances of the serious crash.
