Limassol standoff resolved as woman transferred to hospital

Date:

The hours-long incident involving a woman who barricaded herself inside her Limassol home and threatened to blow it up has ended safely, with police confirming that the situation was brought under control and that no one was injured.

According to the authorities, the Limassol standoff resolved after police negotiators spent several hours persuading the 65-year-old woman not to harm herself. She was later taken to Limassol general hospital for precautionary monitoring.

As reported by CyBC, the woman, who is understood to suffer from psychiatric issues and is on medication, lives in the house with her son and grandson. The incident began when she threatened to detonate the property, prompting a large police presence in the area.

Officers managed to remove two gas cylinders from the home early in the response, reducing the immediate danger. However, the woman was holding a knife and repeatedly threatened to self-harm, making negotiations particularly delicate.

During discussions with police and officials, she requested additional time to secure housing or be offered an alternative place to stay. The incident is linked to an eviction process, with judicial officers present at the scene to serve a court order.

Following negotiations, court servers proposed suspending the enforcement of the eviction order until 11 December, when the woman’s request for a postponement will be formally reviewed.

The Limassol standoff resolved without escalation, with police emphasising the professionalism of negotiators and the priority placed on safeguarding life throughout the operation.
