Limassol carnival kicks off with Tsiknopempti celebrations

The Limassol carnival officially began today, Tsiknopempti, launching an 11-day programme of festivities that will culminate on Sunday, 22 February, with the grand carnival parade.

Morning and mid-morning events

The day started at 07:30 with the traditional “First Foukou” at the Lemesos Media Group offices on 67 Omonias Street. The celebrations continued at 10:00 with music and treats in front of Eurobank on Gladstonos Street and Bank of Cyprus on Agiou Andreou Street opposite Agia Napa Church.

Afternoon performances

Saripolou Square will host afternoon events, beginning at 13:30 with a performance by the “Limassol Kantadoroi” in the presence of municipal authorities, the carnival royal family, and a large crowd.

Evening festivities and queen coronation

At 17:30, Grigori Afxentiou Square (District Administration) will host pre-coronation celebrations for the “Queen of Passion and Madness” with music by the band “Lopodites.”

From 19:00, the Mayor, Municipal Council, carnival royal family, Limassol Philharmonic, and majorettes from the Cyprus Guides Corps and Limassol will process from the Municipal Hall to Grigori Afxentiou Square, meeting the “Ariones” kantadoroi group and the carnival float along the way.

The Batukinio percussion group will welcome the procession at Grigori Afxentiou Square. The coronation ceremony of this year’s queen, celebrated carnival veteran Amaryllis Kyriakou, will begin at 19:30.

Carnival party and projections

The celebrations will continue with a carnival party titled “Back to the 80s and 90s,” featuring Cypriot artists and a DJ programme. Projection mapping on the Limassol District Administration building will transform its architecture into a dynamic audiovisual spectacle.
