Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis appeared on “Protoselido” to provide detailed answers on the controversial video leaked on social media. He maintained it directly targets the President, government, and Cyprus itself.
From the outset, he clarified the government avoids responses but acts within its institutional role, rejecting involvement in claims attributed to private individuals or professionals.
Video analysis and Government stance
Letymbiotis explained the initial position focused on who created the video, their capacity, motive, and why it was posted from a dubious social media account. He emphasized accompanying titles, narrations, and spliced clips aim to lead viewers to a preconceived conclusion not reflecting government reality.
A second statement followed after the competent state service assessed the video, finding editing and compositing elements. These will be forwarded to the Attorney General and Police Chief for handling.
No rush for Presidential statement
On whether the President should address it publicly, Letymbiotis agreed the target is clearly the President, government, and country. He described an organized effort using falsified footage and misleading claims to undermine the leader and three years of investment attraction and image enhancement.
He stressed no reason exists to pressure the President, who will speak if and when he deems fit.
Rejecting transaction allegations
Addressing public distrust post-EU Presidency launch, Letymbiotis categorically rejected state officials’ dealings with foreign investors. He said even a simple viewing reveals manipulative titles creating false associations.
The government neither comments on nor can institutionally address private claims, distinguishing propaganda from evidence-based journalism submitted to authorities. He raised questions on creators’ identity, accountability, fake news, or defamation laws.
Specific denials on contacts and funds
On Presidential benefits via third parties or specific businessman ties, Letymbiotis was absolute: the President has never received funds through intermediaries. He recalled the President’s public commitment to legality and anti-corruption.
The last face-to-face contact with Georgios Chryschoos, portrayed as a frequent interlocutor, was election day via an unanswered congratulatory message.
Authorities will receive formal evidence from the state service for evaluation and action.
Transparency in investments and First Lady’s fund
Responding to citizen concerns, Letymbiotis affirmed no government deviation. It pursues transparent investment attraction, publicized internationally by the President, via institutionalized processes, controls, and the Business Facilitation Unit.
On First Lady’s Social Support Entity funding claims, he stated all is clear and audited by Central Bank, State Auditor General, with House of Representatives updates and Audit Service review. Procedures comply fully, funding needy students via bank transfers transparently.
