Letymbiotis: Cyprus on path to progress for first time since 2017

Date:

For the first time since 2017, we are on a trajectory of positive developments Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a post on “X”, following the conclusion of the plenary session of the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format. Letymbiotis also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reunifying the island within the framework of the United Nations and the European acquis.

“The plenary session of the enlarged meeting is now concluded. For the first time since 2017, we are on a trajectory of positive developments. We remain committed to the great effort to reunify Cyprus, in line with the UN framework and the European acquis, principles and values” he wrote.

The renewed optimism expressed by Letymbiotis comes amid decades of stalled negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The island has remained divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

The informal meeting in Geneva, convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on March 17-18, aims to exchange views with the Cyprus President and the Turkish Cypriot leader on ways of achieving progress on the Cyprus issue. Representatives from Greece, Turkey and the UK are also attending the meeting.
