The legendary Mimis Domazos, one of the greatest Greek footballers of all time, passed away today at the age of 83, following a cardiac arrest outside a private diagnostic medical centre.
The “General” had been hospitalised for three days in critical condition in the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit at the “Red Cross” Hospital. His death has plunged his family, friends, and the team he loved and never abandoned, Panathinaikos, into mourning.
Mimis Domazos was married to Argiro Theodorou, with whom he had a daughter, Popi Domazou.
From 1967 to 1979, he was married to the popular singer Vicky Moscholiou, with whom he had two daughters, Rania (Ourania) and Evangelia.
The “General” of Greek football
Mimis Domazos was one of the greatest footballers in the history of Greek football. He played for Panathinaikos from 1959 to 1978 and was the captain of the team that reached the Wembley final in 1971 against Ajax.
With Panathinaikos, he won a total of 13 titles and was the team captain for approximately 15 years. From 1978 to 1980, he played for AEK, winning one league title. In 1980, he returned to Panathinaikos, wanting to retire wearing the green jersey.
In total, he made 536 league appearances (with Panathinaikos and AEK), holding the record for the most appearances of all time. Despite the passage of over 30 years, he remains at the top of the leaderboard in this category.
He wore the national team jersey 50 times, scoring four goals, and captained the team for several years. His debut for the national team took place on 2 December 1959 at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium against Denmark.
On 11 November 1980, a friendly match against Australia was held at the same stadium to honour his long-standing contribution to the national team and Greek football in general.
During this match, he scored a goal, making him the oldest player to ever score for Greece, just shy of his 39th birthday.
