The Law Office of the Republic issued a sharp rebuttal today to recent public statements and announcements that falsely claim Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelides suspended criminal proceedings against a defendant in a bombing case simply because the person was once represented by Angelides’ former law firm.
“Absolutely untrue”
The Law Office stressed: “There is nothing more untrue than this allegation.”
The decision to suspend prosecution against the specific defendant (on charges related to the bombing incident) became unavoidable for one reason only:
When the trial began, the main prosecution witnesses – the complainants themselves – gave new statements to police declaring they would not testify in court.
Another key witness also retracted his earlier statement that had linked one defendant to the crime, completely neutralising the evidence against him.
As a result, no testimony remained to prove the charges.
Who actually made the decision
The Attorney General of the Republic personally ordered the suspension, acting on the recommendation of the Legal Service officers handling the file and the responsible prosecutor.
Assistant AG Savvas Angelides had recused himself from the very beginning and had zero involvement in any aspect of the case.
The reasons for the suspension were openly declared in court and recorded in the official minutes.
Drug charges continued
The same defendant and another co-accused still faced separate drug possession charges in the same case. They pleaded guilty to those counts, were convicted by the Assize Court and received sentences.
The Legal Service condemned the selective and inaccurate reporting that seeks to undermine public trust in the institution.
