Larnaca taxi drivers commenced a four-hour work strike today, Tuesday, as announced by the Larnaca provincial committee of the Pancyprian Urban Taxi Federation.
The action runs from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m., with the union citing an issue of “professional survival.”
They warn that without immediate and substantive action from authorities, a 24-hour strike will follow on Tuesday, 20 January, and an indefinite strike on 28 January if no solutions emerge.
Key demands against ride-hailing
Drivers protest the lack of action despite repeated meetings with the Licensing Authority and Road Transport Department.
They highlight “uncontrolled activity of passenger transport apps, particularly at Larnaca Airport,” and list two “clear and non-negotiable” demands:
- Immediate and full signal cut-off and activity ban for all out-of-province apps (those without Larnaca Road Use Permits) at Larnaca Airport.
- Strict, universal enforcement of taxi bases by all apps, without exceptions, loopholes, or discretionary interpretations.
The union demands law enforcement and legality restoration, holding authorities responsible for any escalation.
Licensing authority response
The Licensing Authority expressed surprise and concern over announced actions in a statement.
It stated efforts to mediate and support by promoting regulatory changes.
The Authority urged the taxi federation to reconsider and cancel the measures, noting they offer no real benefit to members and risk harming the economy, tourism, and Cyprus’s international image at a sensitive time.
