Larnaca School Board secures emergency Education Ministry funding

Date:

Larnaca School Board secured extraordinary funding from the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth to launch infrastructure and upgrade works across city schools, including awnings, air conditioning, and CCTV in kindergartens, primaries, gymnasiums, and lyceums, stated President Gianna Nikolaou to CNA.

Guided by improving pupil daily life and providing modern facilities, immediate maintenance starts at Agios Georgios Lyceum and a large awning over basketball/volleyball courts at Pancyprian Lyceum Larnaca, lacking a multiple use hall or covered areas.

Further works cover Prodromou Primary building improvements and a new basketball court at Kamares Primary, one of Larnaca’s largest lacking a pitch, its existing one holds a prefabricated public kindergarten.

Targeted awning and sports builds

A large awning rises at Phaneromenis Gymnasium, also without multiple use hall or covered spaces. Courtyard and pitch upgrades hit Agios Ioannis Primary, with an awning at Livadia A Public Kindergarten and two small awnings elsewhere.

Frequent awning requests prompted selection criteria; two schools chosen immediately. Cyprus Sports Organisation’s Social Sport programme funds one Larnaca futsal court, with sports facility criteria selecting another school.

Funds also tackle friable concrete repairs where needed, maintenance at Sotiras Primary – Toulla Charalambous, multiple use hall fixes at Livadia Lyceum and Petrakis Kyprianou Gymnasium.

Ongoing major and technical works

Seismic/energy upgrades continue at Evryviadio Gymnasium and Drosias Gymnasium, floor extension/awning at Special School Agios Spyridon, futsal pitch/changing rooms at Sotira Primary.

Metal railings/fencing and outdoor calisthenics gym build at Pancyprian Lyceum Larnaca; Vergina Lyceum gym for Athletic Schools nears completion.

Air conditioning finishes in 15 schools by year-end, tendering follows for remainder. CCTV completes in eight more schools by mid-February, totalling 12 operational.

Pancyprian Lyceum Larnaca Museum advances: engineering team (mechanical, electrical, civil) and museologist-museographer-designer selected.
