Water dispenser examined by police
Police are investigating a possible poisoning following the death of a 78-year-old man and the hospitalisation of four other individuals in Larnaca.
According to police, the case involves the suspected ingestion of an unknown toxic substance. As part of the investigation, samples of water taken from a household water dispenser are being examined and have been sent to the state laboratory for chemical analysis.
Speaking on the Protoselido programme, police spokesperson Vyronas Vyronos confirmed that all possibilities are being examined, including whether there is any connection to other ongoing police cases.
Asked whether the family is linked to a person recently arrested in a narcotics case, he said all circumstances are under investigation to determine whether any connection exists.
Timeline of events
According to information released by the police, the wife of the 78-year-old initially felt unwell on Saturday and was admitted to hospital, where she remains under medical care. Shortly afterwards, her husband passed away.
On Sunday, friends and relatives gathered at the deceased’s home to offer condolences and have coffee. During the visit, three individuals lost consciousness and were rushed to hospital.
Police said two of the three were administered antidotes as a precaution against possible poisoning. The third person was admitted in a comatose state, with their condition later showing signs of improvement.
Scene sealed, tests underway
Authorities said scientific examinations will be carried out to determine what caused the incident and whether the substances consumed by the five individuals led to adverse health effects.
The scene has been sealed off and remains under police guard, while additional samples are expected to be collected and sent for further laboratory testing.
Investigations into the poisoning case in Larnaca are ongoing.
