Authorities target 10% reduction in water demand
The Larnaca Local Authority (EOA) announced a series of water conservation measures aimed at reducing water consumption by 10% in the city and district. The decision, taken at an extraordinary board meeting on Thursday, seeks to prevent water shortages during the ongoing difficult water situation in Cyprus.
Reducing losses and improving infrastructure
The authority highlighted that, since its establishment on 1 July 2024, it has significantly reduced water losses across its distribution networks. New measures focus on:
- Repairing leaks – Immediate repair of visible and hidden leaks with reinforced crews and overtime work.
- Replacing old household connections – Targeting areas with high water losses.
- Cutting water supply – Suspension of water for irrigation in green spaces, traffic islands, and private plots.
- Integrating boreholes – Where feasible, borehole water will be included in the water balance.
- Faucet attachments – Provided to consumers in collaboration with the Water Development Department, reducing household water use by up to 40%.
Monitoring and awareness campaigns
Enforcement measures include inspections for illegal hose usage under the Water Saving Law. Teams from ΕΟΑ Larnaca will conduct citywide inspections, monitoring water use on streets, sidewalks, balconies, railings, and vehicles.
Additionally, the authority will intensify public awareness campaigns, including educational programs for school students across all levels, promoting responsible water use and proper irrigation practices. Informative leaflets will also be distributed to all consumers, emphasizing the need for water storage tanks of at least 800 liters and functioning pumping systems in apartment buildings.
Call for public cooperation
The Larnaca Local Authority urges all residents to actively participate in water-saving efforts, stressing that collective cooperation is essential to avoid future water cuts.
